3D printed lamps, built layer by layer

A guide to how 3D printed lighting is made, what layered construction does to the light, and why made-to-order production leads to a different kind of object.

What a 3D printed lamp actually is

A 3D printed lamp is built by additive manufacturing: a nozzle lays down a thin thread of molten plastic and repeats that path, layer over layer, until a hollow three-dimensional form stands complete. Nothing is cut away and no mould is filled. The finished object is a record of the path the machine travelled.

That distinction matters for lighting more than for most product categories. A shade is mostly surface, and in additive manufacturing the surface is where the geometry lives. Each layer line is a small ridge, and thousands of ridges stacked together become a texture that reacts to the light passing through it.

How layers change the light

An injection-moulded shade has a uniform wall, so light leaves it evenly and flatly. A printed shade does not. The bond between two layers is fractionally denser than the layer itself, which means brightness varies in fine horizontal bands across the whole surface.

Voxov works with PETG for shades because it holds translucency without clouding and resists yellowing over years of use. In the Clear finish the base remains visible through the shade and the light reads bright and open. Dusk holds the light in and throws it downward. Blush warms it. Cloud softens it into an even, diffused wash.

The direction of the print path is a design decision, not a by-product. The Noorian is a vertical, ribbed silhouette; the Elysian wraps its contours around a rounded form. The two throw noticeably different patterns onto a wall from the same bulb.

Geometry that moulds cannot release

Traditional manufacturing has a hard constraint: the finished part has to leave the tool. Undercuts, re-entrant curves, and deep internal ribbing either force a more complex multi-part mould or get simplified out of the design.

Additive manufacturing removes that constraint. A form can narrow, flare, and narrow again in a single continuous wall. This is why so much of the interesting work in contemporary lighting has moved toward printed shades: the shapes were always drawable, only now they are makeable at a sane cost.

It also allows variable wall thickness within one object, so a shade can be denser where it needs structure and thinner where it should glow.

Material use and made to order

A mould has to be paid for before the first unit exists, which pushes manufacturers toward large runs and warehouses of unsold stock. Printing has no tooling cost, so a lamp can be made after it is ordered rather than before.

The practical effect is less waste. Voxov prints hollow forms with internal support only where the geometry requires it, and bases are made from PLA, a plant-derived bioplastic with a matte finish. Nothing is machined away, so the material that goes into the printer is close to the material that leaves it.

Made to order also carries a cost: a lamp takes hours to print and is assembled and tested by hand, so lead times are longer than pulling a box from a shelf. That trade is deliberate.

Modularity as a design outcome

Because each component is printed independently, shade and base do not have to be committed to at the same moment. Every Voxov shade fits every Voxov base, across both collections.

A single base can carry a Clear shade through summer and a Dusk shade through winter. Sets can be built over time rather than bought at once, and a damaged part is replaced rather than the whole lamp.

How to judge a printed lamp

Layer consistency is the first thing to look at. Regular, even banding is a sign of a controlled print; wandering or blistered lines indicate temperature problems and usually a weaker part.

Second is the material. PETG and PLA behave very differently near heat, and a shade sitting close to a hot bulb needs a plastic rated for it. Voxov lamps are supplied for LED sources, which run cool enough to keep the shade stable for the life of the piece.

Third is the finish philosophy. Some makers sand and coat printed parts until they look moulded. Voxov does not. The layers stay visible because they describe how the object came to exist.
